Here’s a rant that’s near and dear to my heart. One that I’ve been going off about ever since I started veterinary school and got a taste for what REAL client (or ‘patient’ in the human medical profession) communication should be like. My pediatrician kicked me out at the ripe age of 18. I was pissed. I’m still mad at him. If I had a choice, I’d be at his door every damn time. Ever since I got the boot, I have bounced around to AT LEAST 10 different primary care physicians. I’ve been unimpressed with every single one of them.

Here’s what gets my blood boiling… I have had previous health issues, which I have finally been able to manage MYSELF. We’ll save the rant about how POORLY managed my health condition was under the care of my doctors for another time. None of the physicians I see seem to care about my health condition or take the time to talk to me about it or further educate me on it. I’ve had to do it all on my own. Even after expressing that one side of my family that has suffered/died from the resulting effects of said health condition. It’s just jotted down in the medical record. None of them seem to care about any new issues that arise either. ‘We’ll run some labs and let you know if we find anything’. Are you going to ask me any questions about it? Are you going to take a thorough history? No? Sweet. You can join the list of practitioners I will not be returning to.

The funny part is my dog, let me say that again, MY DOG, gets better care than I do. It doesn’t take all that much effort either. Client communication. I know first hand how much it matters seeing it on a daily basis in the veterinary medical profession. It shouldn’t be any different for the human medical profession. Take a THOROUGH history. Ask questions and probe for information if something doesn’t seem right. Ask the client if they have any questions. Ask the client if they have any concerns. Educate them on health conditions they may be dealing with. TAKE THE TIME TO MAKE THEM FEEL SATISFIED WITH THEIR VISIT AND FEEL LIKE THEY’VE BEEN HEARD BEFORE THEY WALK OUT OF THE DOOR.

I’m all fired up now. I know that doctors don’t see the cash coming from my pocket to pay for my visit because I am fortunate enough to have health insurance, but the cost of that insurance does come from my pocket and I expect good service for what I am paying for. Especially when my health is concerned. Something needs to change with the human medical profession in the United States. It’s no wonder the U.S. is ranked 37 in healthcare by the World Health Organization. That is unacceptable.
